Description:

‘A main objective in adjusting and assisting students is to adapt the yoga posture to the body and not the body to the posture.

Eric Bennewitz

This is an important fundamental to understand and practice for yourself and with students.

As yoga teachers, we need to first understand the difference between an assist vs. adjustment. Once this is understood, we need to know when to apply an assist or adjustment to a student. In deciding this, there are things to consider like a student’s body type, age and past and present physical & mental conditions and a teacher’s level of experience for example.

We want to develop a positive teacher-student rapport. This can be done by considering four factors: familiarity between teacher and student, trust, timing and how ‘in-their-body’ a student is or level of kinaesthetic intelligence.

If a teacher goes too deep in adjusting a student, the risk of negatively impacting that student’s yoga experience into the future increases, especially if the four factors are not followed. Assist or adjust with understanding, mindfulness and compassion and the student will connect more deeply to their 'inner teacher' because of your thoughts and actions as the teacher.

Essentially, the more effectively a teacher can guide a student in connecting with their ‘inner teacher’ through appropriate assisting and adjusting, the more positive effect it will have on nurturing a student’s transformation into living with a deeper sense of ahimsa (non-harming) and satya (truthfulness) that ultimately guides them on the path to realizing their essence.

Yes, mindful assisting and adjusting can have this kind of chain reaction with your student.

This 3-day training intensive is about empowering yoga teachers to build confidence by discovering options in refining personal adjusting/assisting skills within an interactive & supportive environment with Eric.

This Yoga Alliance certified training is part of the Satyaloka Yoga 300hr. Advanced Teacher Training program, however is also open to outside students/teachers.
